Social and Digital Journalist

I started up my own journalist Instagram page in March 2021 in my second year of University. I decided to do this because my University Magazine only had a select range of topics one could write about, and my interest at the time was Jewish and Feminist activism opinion pieces. I wanted to be an independent journalist, and so @thatopinionatedbitch was born (an attempt to reclaim what I was called all throughout my school life).

The response was overwhelming, with my first self-written post ("How can men help now") gaining over 84,000 likes and my follower count reaching over 6,000 followers at its highest point. I quickly became acquainted with the medium of social media as a journalist platform and all the tools and skills it required.

I took a hiatus from the platform during my third year of university and last year when I was working full time. I have recently returned to the page in light of starting my MA Digital and Social Journalism degree at City, University of London. I hope to continue to be able to grow my page throughout my year of study and beyond. Have a look at my content below.

Below is a range of other published articles that I have written, edited or been featured in. I was fortunate enough, through the hard work I put into my Instagram page, to be interviewed by Josh Glancy from the Sunday Times, a personal highlight of my journalist journey. This began my interest with working for a publication as well as being an independent journalist, and now on my course I write for both Hackney Post and Interhacktives. I have also been featured in local publications such as Hackney Gazette.

‘I’m an English student — it’s not my job as a Jew to answer for Israel over Gaza’

Until recently, Rachel Coussins generally steered clear of arguments about the Middle East. A second-year English student at Nottingham University, her concerns revolved more around Shakespeare, socialising and salvaging a meaningful undergraduate experience from the wreck of the pandemic.

But like many other Jewish students on campus, the fighting between Israel and the Palestinians has thrust Coussins into the middle of a battle she did not expect to have.

Coussins, 20, describes facing a ts

Swapping bagels for turntables – London nightlife with a Jewish twist

I am knocking on a red, sequin-covered door on Stoke Newington High Street to no answer. After five minutes, roughly the amount of time it takes to realise that the door isn’t actually locked, I let myself in. I wander down the narrow staircase into a small, foggy basement room dimly lit by red LED lights. Sitting around is a handful of people from cooler walks of life than mine – DJs, band members and event organisers.

On the stage area, a jazz band are waiting for their sound check. Their ins

Five Instagram accounts to give you a more rounded view of the Israel-Hamas war

We all know that social media can be tricky and nerve-wracking to navigate at the best of times, and it gets even harder amidst highly difficult and polarising political situations. The current war in the Middle East is sadly no different. With so much dangerous misinformation, triggering content and extreme opinions on both ends of the spectrum, it can be hard to know where to turn for good, honest and accurate social media reporting.

At Interhacktives we’ve come up with a list of five account

Hackney volunteer rates decline when they’re needed more than ever

Hackney is facing a shortage of volunteers as their numbers have been falling following the pandemic. A fair aims to boost volunteering across Hackney and bring the numbers back up.

“We have over 300 live roles on our site at the moment, all of which really do need filling,” said Jane Tyler, Head of Volunteering and Deputy CEO at Volunteer Centre Hackney (VCH), “and demand will increase in winter as weather starts to get worse”. On 1 November, VCH will be hosting 10 local charities at their vol

Women and Misogyny-Affected Individuals Do Not Owe You Their Personal Stories

This past month has been a difficult one for most women and misogyny-affected individuals* (MA individuals). On Wednesday 10th March, Sarah Everard’s death was confirmed after her disappearance from Clapham Common on Wednesday 3rd March.

Sarah’s tragic death and a UN Women’s survey, finding that 97% of women have faced sexual harassment in the UK, have sparked important discussions about the sexual harassment and violence directed towards women and misogyny-affected individuals in their lifetim
